Interview Do’s and Dont's
| Do’s | Don’ts |
| Do review the job posting thoroughly. Consider saving all postings after you apply to revisit. | Don’t rely on memory alone. Write or make notes on scenarios you might use in your responses in advance. |
| Do prepare framework responses to potential questions (e.g. STAR, CAR) along with 6-8 strong examples (e.g. problem-solving, relationship building, DEI) | Don’t have long-winded responses, time yourself practicing your answers. Most interview responses should be no longer than 5 minutes. |
| Do study the organization’s values and priorities. | Don’t forget to read the question and ensure you’ve answered it completely. |
| Do understand the interview format and bring necessary materials (resume copy, notes, questions). | Don’t ignore the job posting. Interview questions are typically drawn from the competencies listed on the posting. |
| Do practice responses to common interview responses out loud. | Don’t rush your answers. Similarly to limiting long-winded responses, practicing your answers out loud in advance can help you avoid rushing your answers, even when nervous. |
| Do be prepared to have thoughtful questions to ask the interview panel. | Don’t speak negatively about previous colleagues, leadership, or workplaces. |
| Do show enthusiasm and genuine interest in the role. Highlight your experience or actions and bring measurable examples. | Don’t forget to ask for clarification if you’re unclear what a question is requesting or don’t understand the language. |
| Do listen carefully to the questions and ask for clarification as needed. | Don’t read your entire response word for word from notes. Consider using bullet points for notes to make responses adaptable and natural. |
| Do prepare logistically and manage nerves through grounding techniques (e.g. take slow breaths, pause before answering, have fidget items nearby). | Don’t downplay your accomplishments. If speaking about yourself doesn’t come naturally, keep a list of professional accomplishments you can draw from. |
| Do request accommodation early (e.g. extra time; questions provided in advance, adjusted timing). | Don’t forget an interview is a first impression. Arrive on time and prepared. If the interview is in person, consider coming early. If it is virtual, test the technology in advance and try to set up in a quiet room with good lighting. |
